Icelandic Authors
Arnaldur Indriðason
The king of Icelandic crime novels, his books have been translated into numerous other languages. My personal favourites are Jar City and The Draining Lake, you can check out his collection of books here.
Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir
Auður is a celabrated author in Iceland. Unfortunately I haven’t read her books yet but I’ve heard good things about the book “Miss Iceland”, it’s supposed to be a really good window into how Iceland was in the 60’s.
Check out her books here.
Yrsa Sigurðardóttir
If Arnaldur is the king then Yrsa is the queen. Yrsa and Arnaldur usually share the top spots for the highest selling crime novels in Iceland.
My favourite from Yrsa would be The Reckoning, check out her books here.
Halldór Laxness
Our only Noble Prize winner and Iceland’s most revered author. His books are good window in Iceland’s society in the 20th century. Independent People is my personal favourite and also happens to be the book that most kids will have to read in high school. Check out his books here.
Jón Kalman Stefánsson
Check out his books here.
Andri Snær Magnason
Not only an author but an environmentalist that has been very outspoken against construction of dams in Icelandic nature to cater to big international companies.
His most recent book “On Time and Water” is very good. There he ties in the loss of a glacier called “Ok” and climate change.
Check out his books here.
